Here are photos showing the aftermath of a fatal nightclub fire in Santa Maria, Brazil. The club was hosting a party for university students, which turned fatal as hundreds of partygoers stampeded toward the exit. Firefighters and police say more than 200 are dead, and at least 200 are injured.

I wish for your happiness while watching the stars. Hang on to your hopes, my dear. Love emerges it disappears. As learned by the earth. We are wandering the road not yet known. We are on a journey forever. But we will return to love. The heart's home is here. Now, please. Won't you smile for me? Don't cry. I'll wipe the tears form your eyes. I wish I could be the one to kiss and touch your heart. Look around. All your dreams are shining.

We were hoping after the launch of the iPhone 5 that we?d get at least a short break from the seemingly endless stream of rumor and speculation, but we quickly realized that wasn?t going to happen. Here?s some more speculation to toss on the ever-growing pile: Jefferies analyst Peter Misek thinks Apple has two new iPhone prototypes in testing. Care to guess what one of those prototypes is?
If you just yelled ?iPhone 5S!? at your computer screen, give yourself a pat on the back. Misek predicted in a note to investors that Apple will begin preliminary production on the iPhone 5S in March, which is one of the reasons we?ve been hearing that the company has scaled back on component orders a bit. Other reasons for the reported component cut back include a healthy stock of some components due to a bottleneck caused by a shortage of others and demand that?s either in line with or only slightly below expectations, according to Misek.
In any case, Misek believes that Apple will launch the iPhone 5S in June or July ? a prediction he?s made in the past. If Apple does launch the iPhone 5S in that window, it will be breaking from its history of late-year iPhone releases. He also believes that the company will ultimately decide to offer a less expensive version of the iPhone, which could be the second device Apple is believed to have in testing. A cheaper iPhone could help Apple in newer markets like China, and he believes such a device would ship with a polycarbonite case, a 4-inch display, and no LTE functionality.
Misek also took the time to make a prediction about the iPhone 6, saying that it will have a larger 4.8-inch screen. To put that in perspective, remember that the Galaxy S III has a 4.8-inch display as well, so iPhone users will be working with quite a bit of screen real estate if that prediction turns out to be true. We?ll have to wait and see if Misek hits the nail on the head with his analysis, so keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more.

At the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, we begin the new year by looking at how American business is doing, discussing the key challenges facing our economy, and identifying the top priorities we plan to work on.
Today, 23 million Americans are unemployed, underemployed or have stopped looking for work. A record 47 million people qualify for food stamps. Median family income has dropped to 1995 levels. Millions of new college graduates, many of them deeply in debt, can?t find promising positions in their fields. And at the current rate, our economy is growing too slowly to make a real difference.
As we consider these factors, economic growth can?t be an afterthought. It must be the focus. That?s why the chamber has an ambitious plan to revitalize the economy and restore the American Dream. We will advance the American Jobs and Growth Agenda to generate stronger growth, create jobs, lift incomes and expand opportunity for all Americans.
We must start by addressing the fiscal crisis ? that means slowing spending, reforming entitlement programs and overhauling the tax code. Policymakers will soon face new deadlines around the debt ceiling, the sequestration budget cuts, and legislation to keep the government operating. These deadlines will mean more uncertainty for our economy, our businesses and the financial markets. Our leaders must make real progress, beginning in the areas they neglected in the fiscal cliff deal ? serious spending restraint and a commitment to tax and entitlement reform.
Beyond the immediate crisis, we must embrace key opportunities to drive growth in the economy. By producing more American energy, we can add jobs, revive manufacturing, generate government revenues and improve national security. If we embrace a bold trade agenda, we can tap booming markets around the world and boost American exports.
We must also focus on policies that are holding us back. We need to address the coming flood of new regulations that will discourage job creation and stoke uncertainty. Reforming our regulatory system is vital to ensuring our competitive edge in the global economy. And by modernizing our irrational immigration system, we can continue to attract the best and brightest to our shores and ensure that we have enough workers to sustain our economy, support our population and stay competitive.
The chamber will be working on these and other critical priorities ? including infrastructure, health-care reform, education and jobs training, and legal reform ? throughout the year.
We ask America?s leaders to stand up and join us in these efforts to restore opportunity and prosperity in our country.

Graeme Smith all praise for Vernon Philander and Alviro Petersen ? Cricket News Update
Graeme Smith, the South African Test captain, is jubilant with his side?s performance in the first Test of the two-match series against New Zealand at the Newlands, Cape Town, and was all praise for Vernon Philander and Alviro Petersen.
The Black Caps won the toss and opted to bat first on a track which was expected to assist the seamers. The decision was not a wise one, especially against the Proteas, who possess one of the finest bowling attacks of the world.
The visitors were bundled out for merely 45 runs in their first innings inside 20 overs, courtesy a brilliant bowling spell by Philander, who grabbed five wickets.
In reply, the hosts posted a huge score of 347 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets before declaring their innings, with Petersen smashing a fine century.
New Zealand performed better in their second innings but could not avoid defeat as they lost by an innings and 27 runs, which allowed the Proteas to take an assailable lead in the series.
While expressing his views in the post-match presentation ceremony, the left-handed opening batsman said that his team did not take things for granted against a relatively weaker side and showed his delight over the performance of Philander and Petersen.
Smith vows to carry on with the momentum in the next match as well, which begins from January 11, at Port Elizabeth.
?I don't think anyone can question our intensity in this game. We had a good build-up. We need to carry it on in PE,? said the South African skipper. ?Vern knows his game really well, attacks the off stump and creates some talk with the ball. Alvrio played
a terrific knock, it wasn't an easy wicket.?
Philander, who was named as the Player of the Match, said that the pitch at Cape Town was conducive to his style of bowling and is extremely happy over his performances in Test cricket over the last 14 months.
?I'd like to take this pitch with me! I don't take it for granted. Teams try different theories against me. I've changed my game slightly, I used to bowl wider, but now take off stump a lot more. It's something you work our yourself the more you play,? the
seamer mentioned.
This protein plays a key role in the formation of the nervous system. It has also been employed as an "Ariadne's thread" to explore mechanisms of nerve-cell growth and differentiation
By Rita Levi-Montalcini and Pietro Calissano
HALO OF NERVE FIBERS radiates from a sympathetic-nerve ganglion that was removed from a chick embryo and then incubated for 12 hours in a semisolid medium containing the nerve-growth factor (NGF). The factor was originally isolated from a mouse tumor designated sarcoma 180 but has subsequently been found to be secreted in trace amounts by a variety of normal and neoplastic (cancer) cells. In 1953 one of the authors (Levi-Montalcini) and Hertha Meyer found that NGF could induce the outgrowth of nerve fibers from an isolated sympathetic ganglion in tissue culture. This discovery led ultimately to the isolation of NGF and determination of its chemical structure. Micrograph, which magnifies ganglion 135 diameters, was made by J. S. Chen at Laboratory of Cell Biology in Rome.Image: Scientific American, June 1979
Editor's Note: Neurobiologist Rita Levi-Montalcini, a Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine in 1986, died December 30 at the age of 103. We are making this article co-authored by her free online for the next 30 days. This story was originally published in June 1979 issue of?Scientific American.
The human nervous system is a vast network of several billion neurons, or nerve cells, endowed with the remarkable ability to receive, store and transmit information. In order to communicate with one another and with non-neuronal cells the neurons rely on the long extensions called axons, which are somewhat analogous to electrically conducting wires. Unlike wires, however, the axons are fluid-filled cylindrical structures that not only transmit electrical signals but also ferry nutrients and other essential substances to and from the cell body. Many basic questions remain to be answered about the mechanisms governing the formation of this intricate cellular network. How do the nerve cells differentiate into thousands of different types? How do their axons establish specific connections (synapses) with other neurons and non-neuronal cells? And what is the nature of the chemical messages neurons send and receive once the synaptic connections are made?
This article will describe some major characteristics and effects of a protein called the nerve-growth factor (NGF), which has made it possible to induce and analyze under highly favorable conditions some crucial steps in the differentiation of neurons, such as the growth and maturation of axons and the synthesis and release of neurotransmitters: the bearers of the chemical messages. The discovery of NGF has also promoted an intensive search for other specific growth factors, leading to the isolation and characterization of a number of proteins with the ability to enhance the growth of different cell lines.
The peripheral nervous system of vertebrate animals includes three kinds of nerve cells: sensory neurons, which transmit impulses from sensory receptor structures to the brain; motor neurons, which innervate the striated, or skeletal, muscles, and autonomic neurons, which regulate the functional activity of the circulatory system, the organs, the glands and the smooth muscles (such as those of the intestine). Autonomic neurons are of two kinds: sympathetic and parasympathetic. The sensory neurons and some of the sympathetic neurons are situated in chains of ganglia flanking the length of the spinal cord. Because these neurons are uniquely accessible to experimental manipulation much of the research on the development of the nervous system at the cellular level has focused on how the nerve fibers projecting from the sensory and sympathetic ganglia make connections with their corresponding target organs.
In the first half of this century the new science of experimental embryology seemed to offer the best way to study the intimate bond that interlocks the growth of the peripheral neurons and their target organs. Ross G. Harrison of Yale University challenged the nervous system of the larva of amphibians to solve problems it would ordinarily never confront, such as providing nerves for limbs and organs grafted from other species. He wanted to see how sensory and sympathetic ganglia, sending out their nerve fibers to these peripheral "fields of innervation," would adjust to the different dimensions and configurations of the foreign organs.
Harrison's results demonstrated that the developing amphibian nervous system is remarkably flexible in adapting to such novel situations, even to the point of accelerating the growth of nerve fibers in a host species to keep pace with the faster-growing limb of a smaller donor species. He concluded that the embryonic nervous system is highly receptive to influences exerted by the peripheral field. Such influences are not species-specific, however, since they can be evoked by organs or rudimentary limbs that have been transplanted from one species to another.
Keeping the Chrome OS party going, Samsung released an updated model of last year's Series 3 chromebox. Gracefully named the XE300M22-B01US, this cloud-based workstation features the same 1.9GHz Intel Celeron B849 processor, 4GB of RAM, six USB 2.0 ports and 16GB SSD as its predecessor. The only real change here is the system's appearance, which is now a sterile white plastic shell with a latch covering its front-facing inputs. The computer recently went on sale in the UK for 279 GBP ($453.50) with Samsung remaining mum on stateside release plans. However, if patience isn't your strong suit and you've gotta have this machine now, you can pick up last year's model (virtually the same hardware) for around $329 or less.
Any sufficiently large company is indistinguishable from evil. That's not a condemnation, it's a realization that, as a company grows, the likelihood that their every policy and decision will lineup with the best interests of a majority, much less all of their users, shrinks. That's true of Apple, who makes our devices and the platforms they run. That's true of Google and Facebook and Twitter, who make our services and keep us connected. That creates controversy.
Here are your most viewed controversies of 2012.
5. Anti-social networks
When you don't sell your product to your users, you inevitably begin selling your users as products. You stop seeing them as human and start seeing them as a commodity to be leveraged and traded, like chattel. Google's relentless drive to catch up in social has seen them force Plus, just like they previously did Buzz, down their users' throats, resulting in all manner of privacy erosions and outright violations. Facebook bought Instagram, which then severed connections to Twitter, and screwed up the PR behind a terms-of-service, just as Facebook has often done before. And Twitter decided it no longer needs the developers who helped make it successful, and so began to starve them out. Increasingly, they build their businesses off of us, and yet do things that aren't in our best interest. They're bastards for doing it, and we're fools for letting them.
Apple's new CEO, Tim Cook, fired Apple's longtime senior vice president of iOS, Scott Forstall. For some, that was fantastic news, a sign that Apple's mobile efforts would be free to go in a new, presumably better direction. For others, it was a cause for concern, that the man who ensured the iPhone would run OS X, and that there would be third party apps, would no longer be there to ensure its future. Cook also fired John Browett, their new head of retail, who had failed to fit into Apple's corporate culture. That's happened before, but Browett seemed so much the antithesis of Apple's retail strategy from the outset, it wasn't his firing that was a surprise. It was his hiring.
A UK court judge said Samsung's tablets weren't cool enough to be copies of the iPad, and ordered Apple to publicly apologize. Instead of just doing it, Apple played cute. Multiple times. And the court got angrier and angrier. So, instead of just swallowing their pride and getting it done with, Apple faced increased attention, increased exposure, and ended up having to pay Samsung's legal fees on top of apologizing. Next time, just hire Denny Crane. Better yet, have the case heard before Judge Judy.
Unlike Apple's hardware and software, which have been relentlessly improved over the years, there's little outward evidence that their services architecture has received anywhere near the same level of attention. Over the course of 2012, repeated Siri, iMessage, Game Center, and iCloud failures suggest the opposite. As Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and other competitors continue to roll out more and better cloud features, moving to a modern, extensible, scalable online system is increasingly critical for Apple. Unfortunately, it's far, far easier for internet companies to buy great apps, designers, and developers than it is for Apple to buy or build great online services.
As much as Apple's services in general suffered through 2012, it was maps that gave them the biggest black eye. Apple had valid reasons, both business and user-focused, to go to their own location service. But it took decades to build TomTom, Nokia, and Google's level of quality, and it takes enormous experience to aggregate, cleanse, sanitize, and verify that kind of data. Apple made a great looking app, something they do incredibly well, but the backend just wasn't there to support it. They oversold and under delivered, the opposite of what Apple's known for, and they paid the price in the media, in the competitive landscape, and worst of all, with their users. To their credit, Apple apologized and is working hard to fix it, but it's not a switch you can pull. It's an arduous process that'll take, days, weeks, months, and perhaps years to get ahead of.
Just because those were the most viewed controversies by the most readers, doesn't mean they're the ones that bugged you the most. So, what got under your skin in 2012? One of the above? Something else?

To me that was strong that the team went to the foul line a lot..Some should notice that Tracy Abrams accentuates his positives by using his left on the drives some.I love when the guys go to the basket but most of them never go left. That in my opinion would make BP3 and JoeTales almost unstoppable(except for the free throw line),because it would change the scouting reports on them and there would be less struggle and frustration at times for this team.I like Egwu's shooting but he and Mclaurin are fairly lacking in the rebounding dept. This was supposed to be a strength for the guy from Coastal Carolina.Im not knocking just observing. These places if they improve upon would make the team mentally strong and make execution of this new offense much more potent....Who thinks this way maybe or tell me what you think... I'm waiting on a response or two Illini fans.

I think BP3 has improved his left quite a bit since last year. I agree they need to continue to develop it.
I am a bit puzzled by our bigs lack of rebounding. They are really, really poor at blocking out and getting boards. It's probably the biggest problem we have.
I really hate the way our bigs over-hedge too. That constantly puts the defense in a bind and messes up the rotations. Wish we would do more showing and less hedging.

Playing zone certainly hurts the big guy's rebounding, but its not like we play that all the time... it certainly is boggling how it seems as though they are completely incapable of boxing out, like... ever

The Illini do not play a lot of zone defense. The myth, urban ledgend that a zone hurts rebounding is utter B.S. Syracuse plays exclusively zone and they are in the top 13 in rebounding. Practic rebounding and boxing out will help. Actually having the bigs occasionally visit the paint helps. In fact having the bigs inside while using a zone is bound to help because they are not chasing someone 30 feet from the basket.

Cuse plays a matchup zone which is more like man to man than the 2-3 that we play, but yes it is difficult to rebound as the center in that kind of defense, because you almost always have two guys jumping over your back on every posession.
I play 2-3 zone in my league and I play center, and my rebounding numbers blow because I am mostly tapping it to one of the baseline guys because it is more effective than getting mauled over my back by two people even though I'm boxing out.

BP's biggest problem continues to be mental.
he's letting the early success go to his head and it is showing in his play. it is cliche, but he so completely fits the need to "let the game come to him"
he has been forcing WAY too much these last few games and his play has dropped off considerably. 12 assists and 17 turnovers last 4 games. to go with a putrid 31.5% from the floor. 25% from 3.
shows in these stupid isolation, jack-up bad shot plays that have happened numerous times...it's as if Paul takes on this Kobe Bryant mentality. that no matter what, he is going to take the shot at certain times. this is unacceptable. he's quite clearly let the early hype go to his head.
Groce has got to get him focused or we are in for a long Big Ten schedule.
#1 -- give Paul a talking too #2 -- try something, i'm not sure what, to snap DJ Richardson out of being God awful.
plenty of other things to work on but these are pressing. we are going nowhere if Paul and DJ keep playing anywhere near this bad.
just glad our next opponent is Purdue and not Indiana. we would be run out of the gym by Indiana right now.

Except that Kobe already got paid. BP3 won't see the NBA if he doesn't correct these problems.

Grammar unruly.
Hey, notice how none of my sentences had a subject? Only two of them have verbs. Well, three now (including a single, conjoined letter).
Point is, you don't always have to follow the rules, but a good rule is to stick with one subject per sentence. (Oh crap, bad example.)
(Let me try again.) You don't have to follow rules. But if you want to be understood, stick to one subject/verb pair per clause.

I just came across this atrocious writing, also from a News-Gazette publication.
It is unlikely that the vast majority of us will ever vaguely understand why a person could believe that driving to a school and shooting 20 children ? as recently was the incomprehensible nightmare in Connecticut ? is a reasonable idea. There have to be so many short circuits in the basic wiring of that individual's humanity that to even approach that sort of thinking is far beyond the boundaries of our own minds. So we rage. And we pray. And we struggle to scab over the wound in all of our hearts.
The jumble could be reduced to
We'll never understand Newtown. It's inconceivable.
without sacrificing gravitas, or changing the meaning.

Apparently some people not only love the sound of their own voices, but also love to read their own excessive textual diahrrea as well.

I wouldn't have guessed the Romantic Language group. Maybe the syntax derives more from Creole than French.

I'm assuming your assesment of BP is merely your opinion, if not are you the team psychologist? I also like your statement "give him a talking too". What do you think coaches do in practice? Do you think they ever work on individual or team weaknesses? Somehow your "talking to" or "try something" seem to be very, very, simplistic approaches. Maybe if Coach gives them a "good talking to" we can win a road game on Wed.
