LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rodney King, the black motorist whose 1991 videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers was the touchstone for one of the most destructive race riots in the nation's history, was found at the bottom of his swimming pool early Sunday and later pronounced dead. He was 47.

King's fianc?e called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to report that she found him in the pool at their home in Rialto, Calif., police Lt. Dean Hardin said.

Officers arrived to find King in the deep end of the pool and unresponsive, with no signs of foul play. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m., Hardin said.

Police Capt. Randy De Anda said King had been by the pool throughout the early morning and had been talking to his fiancee, who was inside the home at the time.

Investigators will await autopsy results to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved, but De Anda said there were no alcoholic beverages or paraphernalia found near the pool.

Authorities didn't identify the fianc?e. King earlier said he was engaged to Cynthia Kelley, one of the jurors in the civil rights case that gave King $3.8 million in damages.

The 1992 riots, which were set off by the acquittals of the officers who beat King, lasted three days and left 55 people dead, more than 2,000 injured and swaths of Los Angeles on fire. At the height of the violence, King pleaded on television: "Can we all get along?"

King, a 25-year-old on parole from a robbery conviction, was stopped for speeding on a darkened street on March 3, 1991. He was on parole and had been drinking ? he later said that led him to try to evade police.

Four Los Angeles police officers hit him more than 50 times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns.

A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.

It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the officers, whose trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges in the beating; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Violence erupted immediately, starting in South Los Angeles.

Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city's Koreatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in running gun battles with looters.

During the riots, a white truck driver named Reginald Denny was pulled by several black men from his cab and beaten almost to death. He required surgery to repair his shattered skull, reset his jaw and put one eye back into its socket.

King himself, in his recently published memoir, "The Riot Within: My Journey from Rebellion to Redemption," said FBI agents warned him a riot was expected if the officers were acquitted, and urged him to keep a low profile so as not to inflame passions.

The four officers who beat King ? Stacey Koon, Theodore Briseno, Timothy Wind and Laurence Powell ? were indicted in the summer of 1992 on federal civil rights charges. Koon and Powell were convicted and sentenced to two years in prison, and King was awarded $3.8 million in damages.

The police chief, Daryl Gates, who had been hailed as an innovator in the national law enforcement community, came under intense criticism from city officials who said officers were slow to respond to the riots, and resigned under pressure soon after. Gates died of cancer in 2010.

In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes, the last in Riverside Calif., last July. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as "Celebrity Rehab."

In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he says. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

Rev. Al Sharpton said in a statement that King was a symbol of the civil and anti-police brutality movement.

"Through all that he had gone through with his beating and his personal demons he was never one to not call for reconciliation and for people to overcome and forgive," Sharpton wrote. "History will record that it was Rodney King's beating and his actions that made America deal with the excessive misconduct of law enforcement."

Attorney Harland Braun, who represented one of the police officers, Ted Briseno, in the federal trial, said King's name would always be a part of Los Angeles history.

"I always saw him as a sad figure swept up into something bigger than he was," Braun said. "He wasn't a hero or a villain. He was probably just a nice person."

King's case never would have become such a symbol without the video, he said.

"If there hadn't been a video there would have never been a case. In those days, you might have claimed excessive force but there would have been no way to prove it."

The San Bernardino County coroner will perform an autopsy on King within 48 hours.

The Battle for the Amazon Heats Up Again

The Amazon rainforest is the most important patch of land on the planet. The trees have been called the lungs of the Earth and that's far more than just a metaphor: they absorb more than 2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, return oxygen in exchange and help regulate the climate of the Western Hemisphere in the process. The forest itself is the hottest of biodiversity hotspots, home to countless species of plants and animals that we have yet to discover ? and even tribes of indigenous human beings who have never been contacted by the outside world. There's a reason that "save the rainforest" became a default slogan for environmentalism in the 1980s; saving the Amazon really did mean helping to save the planet.

The good news is that over the past decade, we've been doing just that. After years of clear-cutting and slash-and-burn agriculture ate into the rainforest, deforestation has fallen to the slowest pace since government officials began keeping track in 1988. Just 2,443 sq. mi (6,327 sq. km) of forest were lost from August 2010 to July 2011 ? 78% below the most recent spike in deforestation in 2004. While lower world prices for beef and soya and a stronger Brazilian currency have helped reduce the market incentive for clearing forest for farming or cattle-raising, a recent analysis by the Climate Policy Initiative found that at least half of the recent drop in deforestation was due to tougher government policy. International pressure played a role in that, but Brazilians themselves made the real decision to protect their Amazon.

That progress, however, could be lost. Last month Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was faced with a tough choice. The lower house of Brazil's National Congress had passed a revision of the country's Forest Code, pushed by the "ruralistas" ? legislators representing Brazil's powerful agricultural interests ? that would have severely weakened legal protections for the rainforest, even granting effective amnesty to landowners who had illegally deforested areas before 2008. According to the government's Institute for Applied Economic Research, the new Forest Code might lead to the loss of as much as 190 million acres (77 million hectares) of forest.

Rousseff had until May 25 to decide whether or not to sign the bill. Environmentalists ? as well as some sectors of urban Brazilian business ? wanted her to veto the thing in its entirety while the ruralistas, who believe a new Forest Code was needed to support Brazil's burgeoning agricultural industry, demanded the whole package. It was a momentous decision for Brazil's President ? especially since the country was set to host the Rio+20 Earth Summit at the end of June.

On May 28 Rousseff issued a partial veto of the revamped Forest Code ? a compromise that managed to annoy both sides. She removed many of the bill's more controversial sections, including the amnesty provisions, and restored obligations for landowners to recover forests that were cut down illegally. But environmentalists inside and outside of Brazil have been mostly unhappy with Rousseff's half-a-loaf approach, warning especially of the dangers of deforestation along riverbanks, which is likely to encourage flooding.

Previously, landowners had to keep 33 to 330 yds. (30 to 300 m) of intact forest alongside rivers, but the new rules will only require 5 to 30 yards (4.5 to 27 m). The new law also reduces the legal reserve requirement ? the proportion of land an Amazon property owner is required to maintain as forest ? and allows landowners to plant commercial species like oil palm or coffee as part of a reserve. "In environmental terms, the law should have been vetoed completely," Luiz Antonio Martinelli, an agronomist at the University of Sao Paulo, told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. "But we know that would be very difficult politically."

Indeed, a full veto by Rousseff would have been seen as a declaration of war on the ruralistas ? and in Brazil, just as it is in the U.S., Big Agriculture has political muscle to spare. As unhappy as many of the environmentalists are, the farm lobby has already said it will challenge Rouseff's partial veto in court. (Brazil's Congress could overturn the veto, but that seems unlikely.) But what will be even more important than the letter of the Forest Code ? however it's eventually formulated ? is whether it will actually be implemented. The Amazon is Brazil's Wild West, and the government's reach from the capital in Brasilia often exceeds its grasp. Enforcement of even the older, tougher forest law in the region was scattershot, which doesn't bode well for the pace of deforestation under a more lenient code.

If there's hope, it's that Brazil itself is changing. As it grows richer ? thanks in part to massive oil finds off the Atlantic coast ? the country will become less dependent on basic agriculture, which could help build domestic support for slowing deforestation. Twenty years ago, when it hosted the first Earth Summit, Brazil was a financial mess, a weakling on the global stage suffering from hyperinflation. Today it's a regional heavyweight with aspirations for global influence ? with a per-capita GDP that surpassed Mexico's in 2010. What's more, whatever the size of Brazil's agricultural sector, modern cultivation methods allow soya farmers and cattle ranchers to get more out of every acre, reducing the need to clear more forest for farm or pastureland. The delegates at the Rio+20 summit later this month will talk optimistically about the ability of the international community to tackle global environmental challenges in unison, but today the successes and failures that count most still occur on the national level. Brazil should lead by example, and it can start by better protecting its most valuable ? and most destructible ? possession.

Pope attacks leaks scandal coverage, backs aides

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Wednesday angrily denounced what he called false media coverage of a leaks scandal shaking the Vatican and expressed full trust in close aides under fire over the worst crisis in his papacy.

In unusually blunt remarks at the end of a general audience in St Peter's Square where he repeatedly referred to personal suffering, the 85-year-old pontiff said recent events had caused sadness in his heart.

"Suggestions have multiplied, amplified by some media which are totally gratuitous and which have gone well beyond the facts, offering an image of the Holy See which does not correspond to reality," Benedict said of a scandal that has seen his butler arrested for stealing secret documents.

Referring to senior Vatican aides, who Italian media accuse of waging a war of leaks as part of an internal power struggle, Benedict added:

"I would like to renew my trust and my encouragement to my closest collaborators and all those who every day, with faith, a spirit of sacrifice and in silence help me to perform my ministry."

The pope's first public reference to the scandal underlined the pain he is suffering over a string of leaks and allegations of widespread Vatican corruption.

That pain was also reflected in his main address to thousands of pilgrims gathered in bright sunshine in front of St Peter's basilica, where he spoke at length about the trials, tribulations and suffering caused even by those closest to you.

"Our life and our Christian path are often marked by difficulties, incomprehension and sufferings," he said.

The pontiff told pilgrims that all people must seek consolation in their faith and persevere in the face of "conflicts in human relations, often from within one's own family."

The Vatican has denounced the leaking of documents from the pontiff's study as a brutal personal attack. A powerful group of cardinals are hunting for others inside the Holy See believed involved in the scandal.

The arrest of butler Paolo Gabriele, 46, was the climax of a tough past week for the 85-year-old pontiff, which also included the abrupt dismissal of the head of the Vatican bank and publication of a book filled with leaks that alleged conspiracies among feuding cardinals, the "princes of the church".

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS

In a long passage of his address devoted to St Paul's epistle to the Corinthians, Benedict repeatedly referred to tribulations and difficulties, saying "Christ...makes us capable of consoling ourselves from every kind of affliction."

On Tuesday, the third most senior figure in the Roman Catholic Church said in an interview in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano that the publication of leaked documents in a recent book by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi was a crime.

It was the first time the Vatican's official paper had reported on the arrest of the pope's butler a week ago and reflected the anger in the Holy See over what is seen as a betrayal of Benedict.

The newspaper also said the butler had been in possession of "a large number" of the pope's private documents, the first time the Holy See has come close to publicly quantifying how much confidential material Gabriele had in his apartment.

Gabriele, who was one of the people closest to the pope, is still being held in a "safe room" in the Vatican's police station. He will face Vatican magistrates again later this week or next when formal hearings start.

The Vatican says a powerful cardinals commission investigating the scandal, "can decide to hear anyone they think might have information in this case".

Several people have already been "interrogated", spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said.

Lombardi denied any cardinals were suspects in a scandal that has rocked the very top of the Church since Gabriele's arrest a week ago and caused a frenzy in Italian media.

While denying reports that the butler was merely a pawn in a larger power struggle among clerics in the Holy See, the Vatican has acknowledged that the affair will test the faith of Catholics in their Church.

Documents leaked to journalists over several months allege corruption in the Church's vast financial dealings with Italian business including infrastructure contracts awarded at inflated prices.

In one example, the Vatican was said to have paid 550,000 euros for a traditional nativity scene in St Peter's Square, thought to be at least double its real value.

Italian newspapers, quoting other whistleblowers in the Vatican, said the arrested butler was a scapegoat doing the bidding of more powerful figures and was punished because the Church did not dare implicate cardinals behind the leaks.

The leaks scandal has touched the Secretariat of State led by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the pope's powerful right-hand man, with Italian media saying it involves a struggle between his allies and enemies, reminiscent of Renaissance conspiracies inside the Vatican or a Dan Brown novel.

Gabriele's lawyers say their client will cooperate fully with investigators, raising the possibility that he could name other informants.

Critics of the pope say a lack of strong leadership has opened the door to infighting among his powerful aides - and potentially to the corruption alleged in the leaked documents.
