As of Wednesday afternoon, Mr Abbott was ranked third on the fundraising leaderboard - having drummed up more than $10,000 in sponsorship - for the Cancer Council's Ride for a Reason Bupa Challenge Tour in Adelaide.
The tour includes rides of between 33km and 138km between Norwood, Gumeracha, Mount Pleasant and Tanunda.
The council has set itself the goal of raising $1 million during the Santos Tour Down Under, a major international cycle event under way in South Australia.
Mr Abbott will head to Adelaide on Thursday to prepare for the event, before taking part in the challenge on Friday and riding with Australia's first ever UCI World Tour team GreenEDGE on Saturday.
