Copy of the genetic makeup travels in a protein suitcase

Friday, May 25, 2012

The blueprint of all living beings is stored in their genetic material. In higher organisms this is stored in the well-protected cell nucleus. "Here a kind of copier works around the clock to make copies of the information needed at the time," says first author Jan Peter Siebrasse from the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Bonn. The copies contain the information which the cells need to produce vital enzymes or other cell building materials. These copies consist of messenger RNA which travels on random paths to the membrane of the cell nucleus and from there through the nuclear pores into the cytoplasm which fills out the cells like jello.

Stringent quality control at the pore

The working group has found out that the messenger RNA lingers briefly at the pores in the membrane of the nucleus before it is finally transported out ? presumably for a final "quality control" or simply because it has to adjust in order to leave via the pore exit. The export process lasts in total only a few hundredths of a second to several seconds. "In all likelihood, the process needs much longer for larger, voluminous messenger RNA molecules than for smaller ones," adds Prof. Ulrich Kubitscheck, head of the working group Biophysical Chemistry and senior author of the publication.

Interestingly enough, only about every fourth collision between arriving messenger RNA and the cell nucleus leads to a successful export. Here, two kinds of processes can be distinguished: On the one hand, brief collisions with the nuclear membrane where presumably no pore is hit, and, on the other hand, those transports that are slowly aborted perhaps on account of a deficient quality control.

RNA is packed in a suitcase made of "protein"

The RNA is packed in a type of "suitcase" made of proteins for transporting. "And it is quite a chunk," grins Prof. Kubitscheck. This is why some of his colleagues presume there are helpers on the outside of the cell's nucleus which pull the "suitcase" through the pores, a theory which the professional physicist together with the molecular biologist Jan Peter Siebrasse are currently investigating

Just what exactly happens en route from the copier to the pores has been clarified in recent years among others by Prof. Kubitscheck's working group at the University of Bonn. "Key experiments on this were undertaken by the biologist Dr. Roman Veith, whose doctorate thesis was awarded this year's Dr. Edmund ter Meer Ph.D. thesis prize from the university society," reports Prof. Kubitscheck. For these experiments the messenger RNA was altered so that it glowed when illuminated with a laser beam. This enabled the researchers to trace the path of individual molecules containing copies of the genetic material in living buccal gland cells of a mosquito type with up to 500 pictures per second. A light microscope with a high speed camera made the observation possible.

Researchers constructed special light microscope

Once the transport processes between the "copier" and the cell nuclear membrane were understood, Prof. Kubitscheck and his colleagues turned their attention in recent years to the direct transport process through the nuclear pores. In order to observe this process, they took a number of years to construct a highly sensitive light microscope which works on the basis of target illumination. It creates delicate pictures of living samples and, in the process of taking pictures with high frequency, creates an unusually strong contrast.

Process is of fundamental biological interest

The question of how the messenger RNA enters the cell from the cell nucleus is of fundamental interest in biology, a fact Prof. Thoru Pederson (University of Massachusetts Medical School) underscores in his comment which accompanies the article paper presented by the Bonn-based scientists. In recent years, there have been two publications on this performed by working groups in the USA and Israel. In these studies, however, the messenger RNA has been altered with additives making the molecules at least double their volume. By contrast, the Bonn-based working group modified the messenger RNA in a negligible way, as Prof. Pederson determined.

How Roofing Professionals Can Assist You with Ice Dam Eradication

Winterization is among the most essential preparation practices needed for preserving homes. Garages, windows, attics, doors, and roofing systems are among the parts of residential buildings which are covered by this process. Shingles and the rest of the roofing frame must be cleaned and conditioned to help them endure the cold blows of the forthcoming winter time.

Nonetheless, no matter how ready roofs may be, there are some inescapable incidents like the development of frozen portions or ice dams on the roofing structure. These often originate from the intricate reaction between the external temperatures and heat loss from a house interior. Unfortunately, ice dams melt through time and result in ugly leaks on walls, ceilings, and attics.

If these aren't instantly taken out of the roofs, ice dams may cause more damage by leaking through the layers of shingles and by rotting the wood roofing frames. Gutters may also be affected; this can lead to problems on flooding. In the future, the heavy frozen weight on the gutters can drag the structure down and completely ruin roofing systems.

And so before it gets far too late, homeowners should learn about the fundamentals of ice dam removal to spare their rooftops from expensive and troublesome devastation. As proposed by experienced home builders, residents may start by cleaning up their roofs and gutters so ice dams do not have anything to begin with. The axiom 'prevention is better than cure' is also appropriate to roofing systems.

On the other hand, those who are already problematic regarding their frozen and sliding roofing systems may start with modest attempts of ice dam removal. They can ascend to their rooftops and properly get rid of the formations, and they may also modify interior ventilation systems to prevent heating their roofing systems further. However, given that climbing up on roofing system is dangerous specifically during snow storms, homeowners are instead advised to get in touch with roofing emergency service from trustworthy Twin cities roofing experts.

For instance, reputable Minneapolis roofing professionals can carry out the required examination as well as the actual ice dam eradication. They do not have to worry about climbing up on roofing systems because these skilled professionals can definitely get the job done. Even though Minneapolis and its twin city always have snowy winters, residences can nevertheless be safeguarded as risks of ice dams are eliminated.

A group of St Paul roofing experts can also deliver repairs and replacements in case of roofing segments damaged by the frozen dams. These roof professionals can offer removal services to liberate homes from mounting risks and problems. For additional info on removing ice dams from roofing structures, go to ehow.com/how_8030144_flat-roof-ice-removal.html.

Facebook Camera hands-on

Image

Facebook has kept itself rather busy in the last month or so with such tasks as going public and purchasing popular photo-sharing app Instagram, but that doesn't mean it stopped working on other projects in the meantime. This realization is apparent with the launch of Facebook Camera, a photo-centric application that chooses to remain separated from the company's general mobile representation. It's still connected with the social network, of course, but it brings a fresh user interface and some light Photoshop-esque features to the table: filters, cropping, zoom, twist and so on. We had the opportunity to grab the new app and take it for a spin on an iPhone, so check out the gallery and continue below for our first impressions.

Raising Crane

The third method is to have a heavy-lift helicopter (or ?skycrane?) airlift the crane to the top of the construction site. This must be done piece by piece?just a single segment of a crane?s tower can weigh between 3,000 and 20,000 pounds. However, because of the cost, and because flying a load-bearing helicopter over a populated area is logistically very difficult, this method is the most rare, used only a few times a year nationwide.

Bonus Explainer: How do cranes get back down? Often by constructing the very gallows that will destroy them. To disassemble themselves, tower cranes construct derricks. (Derricks are tower cranes? simpler great-granddaddy.) These derricks then help dismantle the tower cranes, and?in the case of internal climbers?lower their parts one by one to the ground using extremely long cables. (External climbers, however, can jack themselves all the way back down.) Once the parts reach the ground, they?re taken back to the rental service on flatbed trucks, then the workers take apart the derricks. Most of the derricks? parts can just take the construction elevator.

Tales From The Real Estate Wars - Green Turned the Lawyer

In yesterday?s blog, you?ll note my client listed too-much fishing talk as one of his closing ?don?ts.? He mentioned it as part of a bigger picture, unlike the bank attorney, who blathered on only about his love of slaying fish.

?

Soon the sellers? attorney chimed in, followed by one of the RE agents, who proudly proclaimed her official capacity as head of some fish slaughter club. These new buddies prattled for more than an hour about the joy they all derive from massacring innocent creatures of the sea.

?

The title closer knew that I was a vegan, so she kept giving me sympathetic glances and checked to ensure that I was not becoming too queasy.? Alas, I was!

?

I wanted to shut out the conversation, but 30 years of honing my talent for eavesdropping at closings made it difficult.? So here I was, looking out for my clients in an oxygen-deprived room, listening to graphic boasts about harming sentient beings. My stomach flipped, my brow grew sweaty, yet they never stopped bragging. I mustered all the self-control I had to quell the waves of nausea.

?

?

It?s all well and good to be sociable, and when you have something in common with others in closing room, civility usually trumps hostility. But seriously, any topics not concerned with the mortgage, house or money should be limited to less than five minutes in duration!

John Travolta's First Accuser Drops Lawsuit

Actor's lawyer says he's been 'completely vindicated' of sexual battery accusation.
By Gil Kaufman

The first of the two anonymous massage therapists who filed a sexual battery lawsuit
against John Travolta has withdrawn his legal action. According to CNN, Okorie Okarocha, the lawyer representing a client known as John Doe #1, filed papers on Tuesday to drop the client after he discovered that the masseur had misstated the date on which he alleged the incident with Travolta took place at a Beverly Hills Hotel.

Travolta's lawyer, Martin Singer, said the withdrawal means the actor has been "completely vindicated" and added that, "we fully expect that my client will similarly be vindicated with respect to Doe #2, as well as with respect to any other person who makes meritless claims against John Travolta."

Despite Singer's claims, Okarocha said he stands behind the second unnamed plaintiff, who claims Travolta groped him during a massage in an Atlanta hotel last January. "I can guarantee that John Doe #2 has a truckload of witnesses to back up what he's saying," he said.

Okarocha said the second therapist's claims are reportedly backed up by a series of e-mails in which he complains to his supervisors about Travolta's advances. Reacting to that comment, Singer said the documents he's seen online purporting to be one of those e-mails, "significantly does not refer to my client at all, nor does it make any mention whatsoever of any of the things outrageously alleged in Doe #2's lawsuit ... Instead, Doe #2 voiced complaints about his co-workers gossiping and being insubordinate."

The fact that the e-mail doesn't once mention Travolta's name, "says it all," according to Singer. "Nothing that is alleged in Doe #2's lawsuit was mentioned in the e-mail he sent to his bosses, making his claims even more unbelievable ... The allegations in 'Doe #2's' lawsuit are unraveling, just like 'Doe #1's' ridiculous allegations, which were proven false and impossible," he said.

Okarocha appeared confident in his case, though, vowing to "mop up" in the courtroom with the witnesses and documents in the case against Travolta. "I think I can show a custom, habit and practice," Okarocha said, referring to his claims that the actor has sexually assaulted dozens of other massage therapists over the years. "If I bring in 100 people that don't have an ax to grind, don't want any money, they're in 50 different states, they don't know each other, they're all massage therapists, they all have dates, they're at different spa resorts and they say this exact same thing happened, it's pretty hard to refute."

Unlike the first accuser, Okarocha vowed that his client, "ain't going nowhere," and is looking forward to a trial.

Travolta, 58, has been married to actress Kelly Preston for 20 years and has repeatedly denied whisper campaigns about his sexuality.

Before dropping the first accuser, Okarocha apologized on Friday for putting the wrong date of the John Doe #1 incident in the lawsuit, which his client initially told him occurred on January 16, 2012. Singer was able to produce a restaurant receipt and a time-stamped photo that showed Travolta was in New York, not Los Angeles, on that date. Rather than amend the lawsuit, Okarocha decided to withdraw the allegation from the suit and drop John Doe #1 to avoid hurting the chances of the second plaintiff's suit.

Radar Online reported that John Doe #1 has hired famed L.A. attorney Gloria Allred to represent him. "I represent John Doe #1. Mr. Doe's lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice which means that he is still legally entitled to file another lawsuit against John Travolta if he chooses," said Allred. "We are in the process of conferring with him regarding the next steps, which he may wish to take. Our client and our firm has no further comment at this time."

Podcast Episode #2 - Mesothelioma Law Firm

?

Shrader Podcast 2

Interviewer: Hi. I?m here with Robert Shuttlesworth of Shrader and Associates, and I?m going to be asking him some questions about mesothelioma. What is mesothelioma?

Robert Shuttlesworth: Mesothelioma is a very rare cancer that affects the linings of either the stomach, the lungs, or the heart. Every organ has a little thin membrane around it, which protects it from the other organs, and mesothelioma is a cancer that develops in that lining.

Interviewer: Is mesothelioma preventable?

Robert: Mesothelioma is preventable in the sense that asbestos companies never should have used asbestos, thereby exposing millions of people to the deadly fiber. But it?s not preventable in the sense that it takes so long to develop. Mesothelioma has got about a 40-year latency period. So if you were to set out today to say, ?I don?t want to be exposed to asbestos,? that would protect you 40 years from now. But it didn?t protect you when you were a much younger working person and being exposed in that scenario. So it was preventable from the companies? end by not putting it into our environment, but it?s not so much preventable on the workers? end if you?ve already been exposed to asbestos. Going forward, you don?t want to be exposed to asbestos, but there?s nothing you can do about past exposures at this point.

Interviewer: Does everyone exposed to asbestos develop mesothelioma?

Robert: Absolutely not. It?s a very rare cancer. It happens, oh, roughly 2,000 times a year in our country. There?s no rhyme nor reason as to who gets it, but people who were exposed to more asbestos have a higher risk of developing the disease than people who were exposed to less amounts of asbestos. But for the most part you can be exposed to asbestos, and it?s extremely rare to develop the cancer.

Interviewer: Is asbestos still used today?

Robert: Asbestos is still used if you look at the world market. It?s still used in developing countries. It?s still being mined in certain places, Canada, for example. It?s not used so much in the day-to-day products that we were using 30, 40 years ago in this country. It is still used in specialty applications. Obviously, it has a scientific value. Obviously, it?s used in the aerospace industry when you?re dealing with things that have to be super-heated, and it?s still a great insulation in that regard. But on a day-to-day basis it?s not being used anymore.

Interviewer: How do I know if there?s asbestos in my home or workplace?

Robert: The best way to determine that is through research. Obviously, things that were built in the fifties, sixties, and even into the seventies and eighties may contain certain amounts of asbestos in either the dry wall, the ceiling tiles, the floor tiles, different types of cements, siding, things of that nature, roofing shingles. All of those can have a certain amount of asbestos in it. Those products new on the market today do not. But if they were installed 30, 40 years ago, there?s a good bet there could be asbestos in it. The best way to handle that is just to presume that everything that you have in an old house may contain asbestos, and try not to create dust from those products. You don?t want to go drilling down a wall or tearing something up unless you?ve tested it to see if there?s asbestos in it.

Interviewer: What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?

Robert: Well, mesothelioma has a wide degree of symptoms. As we run through them, you?ll see that these symptoms are not unlike anything else that resembles pneumonia or the flu. Some of the first symptoms of mesothelioma can be a pain, a dull pain in the back or the chest, difficulty breathing. Sometimes the body, when the cancer just starts to develop, will start to fill in with fluids. It puts pressure against the lungs, and that makes it very difficult to breathe. Certainly, anything else associated with types of lung cancers would be symptoms?shortness of breath with either exertion or at rest, cold-like symptoms, deep, deep cough. Anything along those lines can be a symptom of mesothelioma, which makes it very difficult to detect because you may think you have a cold, but in fact you may have a deadly cancer in your body at the same time.

Interviewer: So if I have shortness of breath or trouble breathing, should I be concerned that I have mesothelioma?

Robert: No, it doesn?t. What it may mean is that you have something that?s keeping you from breathing correctly. Mesothelioma, one of symptoms is shortness of breath, but so is a cold. So is pneumonia. So is lung cancer. So are a number of things that can cause shortness of breath. When you have shortness of breath, that?s something you want to talk about with your personal physician just as you would with anything else. Maybe you have a chest cold. When you go into your physician and explain your symptoms, they?re going to know what to look for. You want to make sure that your doctors always know that you were exposed to asbestos so they can at least put mesothelioma on the range of things they need to be looking at you for.

Interviewer: Can I have mesothelioma but show no symptoms?

Robert: Yes. Mesothelioma is what we call an occupational disease, meaning that it takes 20 to 40 years sometimes to develop. The exact molecular process on how a regular cell turns into a cancer cell is not completely known, but the asbestos fiber hits the cell. It changes the DNA, and that cell becomes active some 20 to 40 years later. It?s very difficult to detect mesothelioma until it?s expanded and grown into essentially, what you?ve maybe heard of, Stage Four cancer. So until it gets to such a far degree along the path, you had mesothelioma all along but it didn?t trigger it and grow ?til the very end. So yes, it?s possible to have mesothelioma but not feel any other symptoms from it.

Interviewer: How is mesothelioma diagnosed?

Robert: The first step in becoming diagnosed with mesothelioma is to talk to your personal physician. They are the ones who are going to know your health and your body the best. Generally speaking, if there?s a pain in your chest, they?re going to want to do a chest x?ray, a CT scan, something along those lines and identify if they see anything, an abnormality, inside the chest. To the extent they see an area that they?re concerned about, a pathologist will come in and do what they call a biopsy. They?ll go in usually through the rib cage and take a little bit of tissue out. Then the pathologist will then look at those cells underneath the microscope. The pathologist is trained to look at the cells and determine what they are. That?s how a full diagnosis of mesothelioma is obtained, through a pathologist.

Interviewer: Can mesothelioma be misdiagnosed?

Robert: Yes. The most common forms of misdiagnosis of mesothelioma would involve on the personal physician level where you presented the flu-like or cold-like symptoms, and they misdiagnose you as having a cold, a touch of pneumonia, or a bacterial infection, something along these lines. When those treatments don?t resolve the problem, then additional testing may be necessary. There are times when the pathologist doesn?t get the tumor when they go in and do a biopsy, and therefore they misdiagnose it as something else. But generally speaking, they may misdiagnose mesothelioma but diagnose you with a different form of cancer. In either event they?ve got you with a diagnosis of cancer. They may not know specifically which kind yet.

But mesothelioma is very rare. Sometimes doctors are not familiar with it. There are only a handful of clinics in the country that specialize in the diagnosis of it. So often, if you?re in a small health care market, they?ll send your tissues off to a Mayo Clinic, a Sloan Kettering, or an MD Anderson type of facility to have the world?s experts take a look at it.

So sometimes it can go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed until the authority figures finally look at it and determine what it is.

Interviewer: Is mesothelioma the same thing as lung cancer?

Robert: No, actually it?s not. Mesothelioma develops outside the lung on that lining around the lung whereas lung cancer generally develops inside the lung. There are different cell lines. They create different forms of cancer. You?ll hear people discuss mesothelioma as lung cancer just mainly because of the close proximity to the lung. But it?s those two different forms of cancer, and there are two different forms of treatments available for them.

Interviewer: What is asbestosis, and can it progress into mesothelioma?

Robert: Asbestosis is a nonmalignant form of asbestos-related diseases. It?s essentially in the most basic sense a difficulty breathing. Asbestos gets into the lung. It doesn?t come back out. It stays in there. It damages lung tissue, and it makes it difficult to breathe. So you?re reducing the volume of your lung by having it essentially backed up with asbestos. Asbestosis itself, the disease of asbestosis, does not progress into mesothelioma. Those are two distinct forms of disease. But the fact that you have asbestosis proves that you were exposed to asbestos, and the asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma.

Interviewer: Do I need to see a specialized doctor for mesothelioma treatment?

Robert: Generally speaking, when you?re diagnosed with mesothelioma, that?s going to be a pathologist who?s then going to send you to an oncologist. Oncologists are cancer doctors, and those are the ones that would treat mesothelioma. Amongst the oncologists of the world there are some that specialize specifically in mesothelioma. In general you will find those particular types of doctors and physicians at the major hospitals in major metropolitan areas. New York, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, things of that nature will be where the very specialized mesothelioma doctors reside.

But if you?re concerned about getting a doctor that is specific to mesothelioma, you need to talk to your oncologist and other treating physicians to see if they can give you a name or recommendation for one of those hospitals.

Interviewer: How do I find a mesothelioma doctor?

Robert: The best place to find a mesothelioma doctor is with your current physician. If you?ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, there?s no doubt that you have a primary care physician. You probably have a pulmonologist. You probably have a pathologist. You probably have an oncologist already on your team. You?re going to want to talk to these physicians to see what their recommendations are on finding a specific mesothelioma doctor. There are a number of treatment places in the country that specialize in mesothelioma treatments. These are traditionally the number one, number two, number three cancer hospitals in the country. Certainly, you can contact those hospitals directly, but first you should start discussing these types of things with your personal physicians.

Interviewer: What is metastasis?

Robert: Metastasis or metastatic disease is the spread of disease from one organ to another. Generally speaking, and especially when you?re dealing with cancer, a cancer will start off someplace, and then they?ll say it spreads or metastasizes to another organ. For example, if you had colon cancer and they find it early, well, then it?s contained all within the colon. They cut it out, and hopefully everything?s fine. Other times they?ll find the cancer because it spread to the liver, the lungs, the brain, or some other organ. When it spreads, it?s much more serious because now it?s affecting more than just the one organ.

Interviewer: If our listeners are seeking additional information, is there a website or a phone number that you can direct them to?

Robert: Oh, certainly. Our website?s very good. It?s yourmesotheliomalawfirm.com, and our phone number is 1-877-637-6347.

Interviewer: Great. Thank you.

No More Beating Around The Bush At Yahoo: Thompson Is Out, Levinsohn In As CEO, Effective Immediately

Yahoo has now officially confirmed the news we reported earlier: Ross Levinsohn is now interim Chief Executive Officer, replacing Scott Thompson, and Fred Amoroso is chairman of the board. Scott Thompson's departure and the reasons for it are not mentioned at all in the statement, which simply says he has left the company. (Earlier a report in AllThingsD had said he would resign for personal reasons, although at least in this statement nothing at all is mentioned for why he has left.) The announcement from Yahoo also underscores how activist shareholder Third Point is very much the key player in all of this.

Apple's iPad WiFi + 4G renamed 'iPad WiFi + Cellular' across many of its stores

Image

Remember Apple's new iPad WiFi + 4G? Well, forget that moniker, as this variant of the company's latest slate has been quietly re-dubbed as the iPad WiFi + Cellular. As noticed by 9to5Mac, the change occurred within the last "24-48 hours" across many of Apple's region-specific webstores (update: and retail locations), including (but not limited to) those for the US, UK, Australia, Canada and various countries in Asia. If you'll recall, in many regions the best you'll get out of the slate is HSPA-connectivity, even though it's also equipped for LTE -- something that Apple itself had considered good enough to market it as 4G despite offering refunds to customers in Australia who (like many others) couldn't officially partake in its LTE. Interestingly, 9to5Mac also notes that a similar change hasn't made its way over to the iPad 2, which still has its cellular-equipped variant named, iPad 2 WiFi + 3G. We've reached out to Apple for comment, but the meantime, feel free to hit up the source links below for more insight.

President Obama?s advantage on national security marks the first time in decades a Democratic candidate has had such an edge. DC Decoder?s Liz Marlantes explains.

That's one of the details tucked in thousands of pages of documents that were seized in last year's Navy SEAL raid.?West Point?s Center for Combating Terrorism (CTC) released a study of 17 declassified documents today, offering a window into Mr. bin Laden?s views.

The report notes that one of ?the most compelling? stories to come out of the declassified documents is bin Laden?s struggle to rein in Al Qaeda affiliates, and keep his intended message and branding on track.

?I plan to release a statement [announcing] that we are starting a new phase to correct [the mistakes] we made; in so doing, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the Jihadis,? bin Laden wrote in 2010.

The CTC report notes that though bin Laden publicly condemned the West, focusing on the repression and injustices exacted on Muslims by countries like the US, his private correspondence reveals that he was particularly pained by domestic jihadi attacks on Muslims.

His frustration may have even led bin Laden to consider rebranding his Al Qaeda movement as a whole. One letter by an unknown author suggests a list of potential names?(see English translated document?# 0000009).?Some of the proposed options are aimed at making followers of Islam feel more included in the organization.

But pithy they are not:

*?Tanthim al-Jihadi li-tawhid al-Umma wa-inkathiha, which means Jihad Organization for Unification and Rescue of the Nation,

* Tanthim al-Jihadi litahrir al-aksa wa-tawhid al-Umma, or Jihad Organization to Liberate Al-Aqsa and Unify the Nation,

* Hizb tawhid al-Umma al-Islamiya, Islamic Nation Unification Party.

Damage control was an apparent concern for the organization that has little oversight on an operational level with affiliates and those simply inspired by Al Qaeda's work. In response to a letter from Al Shabab leadership in Somalia expressing interest in identifying themselves as an Al Qaeda affiliate, bin Laden wrote, "If asked, it would be better to say there is a relationship with al-Qaida, which is simply a brotherly Islamic connection, and nothing more," according to the United Press International.

"Rather than a source of strength, [bin Laden] was burdened by what he viewed the incompetence of the 'affiliates,' including their lack of political acumen to win public support ... and their poorly planned operations which resulted in the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Muslims," reads the CTC report. Bin Laden was apparently disappointed by affiliate group ISI/AQI's arbitrary attacks on Shi?ite civilians, and warned other affiliates not to commit the same mistakes.

Bin Laden feared the frequency of civilian deaths that often occurred as ?collateral damage? in regional attacks were causing the Muslim populace to lose sympathy with the movement ??particularly when these deaths were ?exploited by the enemy,? bin Laden wrote, presumably referring to Western media and governments. He also indicated a desire to create an Al Qaeda Central, a term pulled, ironically, from Western media, to maintain greater oversight of affiliate groups.

Documents also reveal that in light of the Arab Spring ? something bin Laden viewed positively ? he wanted to focus more attention on media and outreach. In part, he hoped to rouse those who hadn?t yet rebelled against their rulers to do so, but he also acknowledged the important role media plays, as ?a [principle] element of the battle.? He expressed an interest in creating an Al Qaeda media outlet that could inform more mainstream Muslims about jihad, and perhaps spark their interest in the movement.

Who's Afraid of a Big Bad Hacking Story?

It's been a cheerily good spring for FOSS fans here in the Linux blogosphere, so we may perhaps be forgiven for our utter shock and disbelief at the affront recently committed against us by a certain brick-and-mortar purveyor of books and magazines. Barnes & Noble yanked the very excellent Linux Format magazine from its U.S. shelves -- apparently because of a cover story on the topic of "hacking."

Oil prices fall to six-month low. Gas to follow.

Oil prices fall below $99 a barrel on weak jobs report. At $3.80 a gallon, gasoline prices should follow oil prices down.?

The?price?of?oil?plunged to its lowest level in nearly six months Friday, falling below $100 per barrel for the first time since February. A drop in gasoline?prices?can't be far behind.

It's a welcome trend for motorists, with the summer driving season just around the corner. And it eases some pressure on the U.S. economy, which has shown only agonizingly slow growth in the nearly three years since the Great Recession ended.

Oil?fell $4.05, or 4 percent, to $98.49, after a weak U.S. jobs report offered the latest evidence that the global economy is weakening, possibly reducing demand for?oil. At the same time, there is mounting evidence that world?oil?supplies are growing.

"The jobs report was the coup de grace," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG Investment Research. "But it's hard to see how?prices?could have stayed on the boil given ample supplies and continued economic uncertainty."

For the week,?oil?fell more than $6 and is now about $12 below its February high. U.S. gasoline?prices?have fallen to $3.80 per gallon from a peak of $3.94 in early April.

Now they could go as low as $3.50 per gallon by July 4, according to Tom Kloza, Chief?Oil?Analyst at theOil?Price?Information Service.

Tony Wei, a mechanical engineer from Piscataway, NJ., will welcome lower?prices. He travels 100 miles every day to and from his job in Morris County, N.J. He's also planning a 500-mile trip to Canada and a 400-mile trip to southwest Virginia this summer in his Honda Accord.

"Definitely, I'm going to notice it," he said. "I buy so much gas."

The picture of the?oil?market is the reverse of just a few months ago. Then, world?oil?demand looked to be rising quickly at the same time that world supplies were threatened by a host of small production outages and the potential for drastically reduced production from Iran, the world's third-biggest exporter.

Those developments raised the prospect that world supplies would be at their most tenuous just as the summer driving season arrived in the developed world. The?price?of U.S. benchmark?oil?rose to about $110. The?price?for international?oil?used to make most of the gasoline in the U.S. spiked even higher, to $128 per barrel.

Gasoline?prices?in the U.S. appeared to be on track to soar past $4 per gallon nationwide, another burden for U.S. consumers already suffering from high unemployment and pitiful wage growth.

Verizon takes the lead on text to 911 services

Verizon takes the lead on text to 911 services

The FCC first outlined its intention to allow texting to emergency services back in 2010, and since then despite more talk of accepting photo and video messages, nothing official came to be. This week, however, Verzion has taken the initiative, and announced its own plans to enable text to 911 for its customers. Working with TeleCommunication Systems, the big red hopes that it can facilitate the sending of SMS messages to emergency call-centers as soon as early 2013. Texting isn't just about adding communication options, it also provides a valuable tool to the deaf, hard of hearing and situations where talking is dangerous, or not possible. The service will use existing CDMA and SMS networks, and therefore should be available to all customers once finally rolled out.

Nate Diaz will get next title shot after UFC on Fox 3 win

Nate Diaz's next opponent is set. After his dominating win over Jim Miller on Saturday night, MMA Junkie reports that Diaz will get the next shot at the UFC lightweight belt.

Though previous reports had Diaz possibly facing off with Anthony Pettis for a title eliminator, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Diaz will get the next title shot after champion Benson Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar rematch this summer.

In his last three fights, Diaz has a second-round submission over Miller, a decision over Donald Cerrone and a first-round submission win over Takanori Gomi. With an overall record of 16-7, five of his losses have come in the UFC but he has never been stopped in the Octagon. Diaz was last submitted by Hermes Franca at a WEC bout in October of 2006.

Does Diaz deserve the next title shot in the packed UFC lightweight division? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Space Shuttle Enterprise arrives in NYC atop a Boeing 747 (+video)

Earlier today, NASA's Space Shuttle Enterprise touched down in New York City, where it will find a new home in the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

NEW YORK, NY ??Space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype for NASA's storied orbiter fleet, is now a New Yorker.

The original test space shuttle, Enterprise flew into the Big Apple?on Friday (April 27) atop a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet. The air- and spacecraft duo touched down at New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport at 11:22 a.m. EDT (1522 GMT) following a photogenic flyover of some of the metropolitan area's most famous sights, including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, which Enterprise will soon call home.

Enterprise, mounted to NASA's Shuttle Carrier Aircraft?(SCA), took off from Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. at 9:39 a.m. EDT (1339 GMT).?The nearly two-hour flight had been delayed for several days due to weather concerns.

The ferry flight marked the first time Enterprise had been airborne in more than a quarter-century. The prototype orbiter ? which never flew in space but was used for a series of approach and landing tests in the late 1970s ? had been a part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's collection since being flown to Washington in November 1985. [Photos: A Space Shuttle Called 'Enterprise']

On April 19, Enterprise was replaced?at the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., by Discovery, NASA's most-flown space shuttle. Friday's flight to New York began Enterprise's journey to the Intrepid, a converted World War II aircraft carrier, for its permanent display.

Enterprise's final landing was witnessed by an audience of 1,500 invited guests, including New York state and local elected officials. A brief handover ceremony between NASA and Intrepid staff was to be held at the airport. The space agency already turned over Enterprise's title?to the museum last December.

Now on the ground in New York, Enterprise and the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft will remain mounted together at JFK until NASA can move and set up the two large cranes that joined the two vehicles in Washington. Once separated, Enterprise will be parked in an airport hangar for several weeks.
