A new study has identified a key mechanism that causes breast cancer to spread. The research, published by Cell Press on March 30th in the journal Molecular Cell, enhances our knowledge about the signals that drive cancer metastasis and identifies new therapeutic targets for a lethal form of invasive breast cancer that is notoriously resistant to treatment.

Amplification of the gene for ErbB2 has been linked with aggressive forms of breast cancer and is associated with a poor outcome. Although ErbB2-positive breast cancers are routinely treated with chemotherapy and the ErbB2-targeted drug trastuzumab (Herceptin), this treatment often fails. "Nearly half of breast cancers with high ErbB2 expression are either initially non-responsive or eventually develop resistance to trastuzumab," explains senior study author, Dr. Tuula Kallunki, from the Danish Cancer Society Research Center. "Therefore, a better understanding of the molecular basis of ErbB2-induced malignancy is critical for further development of targeted treatments."

In the current study, Dr. Kallunki and colleagues discovered that ErbB2 induces expression of proteins called cathepsins. Previous work has linked cathepsins with metastasis of pancreatic cancer, specifically with tumor cell invasion of surrounding tissues and with the establishment of tumor blood supply. Using a three-dimensional model system to study ErbB2-induced cellular invasion, the researchers demonstrated that inhibition of cathepsins prevented ErbB2-driven breast cancer invasion. They went on to identify components of the complex signaling network linking ErbB2 and cathepsin expression with cancer invasiveness.

Taken together, the results demonstrate that the invasive behavior of ErbB2-positive cancer cells is dependent on cathepsin activity and uncover a molecular link between ErbB2 and breast cancer invasion. "Our work has introduced a cellular model system to study ErbB2-induced invasion and identified an invasion-promoting signaling network," concludes Dr. Kallunki. "In addition, our findings provide several potential therapeutic targets against ErbB2-driven invasive cancers."

SolarCity Charges Into Home Efficiency With Admirals Bank ...

The company already has 5,000-plus efficiency projects completed or underway in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Texas.

?We?re trying to bring our customers a full range of clean, affordable alternatives to utility power,? explained SolarCity spokesperson Jonathan Bass. Electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home, a federal study found, puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars.

Admirals Bank, a federal savings bank with a history as a home improvement lender, will make available between $2,500 and $15,000 per customer, Bass said. That should readily meet the cost of the typical upgrade which, according to SolarCity Manager of Energy Efficiency Services Levi Blankenship, is between $4,000 and $12,000. That investment, Blankenship added, typically reduces a homeowner?s combined natural gas and electricity costs by 20 percent to 50 percent.

A Department of Energy (DOE) study found that the U.S. spends $241 million yearly on home energy bills. That?s one in five of the dollars the U.S. spends on energy. It is an average of $1,900 per family.

?We saw with solar that if we reduce or eliminate the upfront costs,? Bass explained, ?it makes it available to a new set of customers.? The company?s expectation is that the same thing will happen with energy efficiency.

The SolarCity process begins, Blankenship said, with an on-site home energy evaluation that diagnoses the cause of high utility bills and energy losses. Proprietary SolarCity software does four-billion-plus calculations for each home evaluation and produces a report across nine efficiency categories. SolarCity uses the report to prioritize recommended home improvement options based on energy and cost savings.

?Typically,? Blankenship said. ?There two categories of improvements.? Over half a building?s energy consumption is for ?space conditioning,? he explained, ?either heating or cooling. So the building shell, or envelope, is a huge component.?

A SolarCity 250-home analysis, incorporating DOE statistics, found that about $40 of every $100 spent on heating and cooling is lost to duct and air leakage. In their evaluation, SolarCity people identify the amount of ?re-insulation? and ?air sealing? needed ?to retain heat in the winter and keep it out in the summer so that the furnace and air conditioner do not need to run as often.?

Once they are sure the building shell is efficient, Blankenship said, ?We turn our attention to the mechanical equipment itself. The furnace, the air conditioner, the heat pump, the water heater, the equipment that provides conditioned air. We want to be sure it is efficient and sized for the house.?

It is ?the granularity of the software evaluation,? Blankenship added, ?that makes it possible for us to eliminate client and confusion concerns that may have slowed adoption in the past. The software, coupled with the loans that will make it possible to eliminate upfront costs, is really exciting.?

SolarCity?s efficiency financing already supports a range of local energy efficiency loan and rebate programs. The Admirals Bank-backed Home Energy Loan financing option is expected to further reduce and/or eliminate the upfront cost of energy efficiency upgrades.

?We will work with programs that are out there in our service territories and direct our customers to the best option for them,? Bass said. ?But in places where there is no efficiency program, we wanted to give customers the option of evaluations and upgrades.?

SolarCity and Admirals Bank intend to make the loan process as convenient and accessible for customers as possible. Eligible customers will be able to choose between a one-year ?Save Now, Pay Later? option and 3-year or 10-year ?Pay As You Go? options. The one-year option can be interest-free.

?Commonly, there are utility, county, and/or state rebate programs, but the rebates don?t get paid immediately. There can be a several month lag.? The one-year option gives homeowners time to collect and use the rebates and pay off the balance without incurring interest charges. ?If the loan is repaid within one year,? Bass explained, ?there is no interest.?

Wade speaks out on shooting death of Florida teen

MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade and LeBron James were only a few miles away from Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, participating in the NBA All-Star game on the night the unarmed black teenager wearing a hooded sweatshirt was shot to death by a neighborhood crime-watch volunteer.

They never knew the teenager, but on Friday they decided it was time to speak out.

Wade posted a photo of himself from a previous photo shoot wearing a hooded shirt, otherwise known as a hoodie, to his Twitter and Facebook pages on Friday morning.

A couple hours later, James posted another photo ? this one of the Heat team, all wearing hoodies, their heads bowed, their hands stuffed into their pockets. The photo was taken at the team hotel, though it was not clear when it was snapped.

Among the hashtags James linked to the photo: "WeWantJustice." The National Basketball Players Association issued a statement saying it was saddened and horrified by the killing, and accused the police department in Sanford, Fla. ? where Martin was shot ? of "racial bias."

"As a father, this hits home," said Wade, who has 10- and 4-year-old sons.

Martin was killed as he was returning to a gated community, carrying candy and iced tea. A neighborhood crime-watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, said he acted in self-defense. He has not been arrested, though state and federal authorities are still investigating.

Protests have popped up nationwide in recent days, with thousands of people ? many of them wearing hoodies ? calling for action.

"This situation hit home for me because last Christmas, all my oldest son wanted as a gift was hoodies," Wade told The Associated Press on Friday from Auburn Hills, Mich., where the Heat were to play the Detroit Pistons. "So when I heard about this a week ago, I thought of my sons. I'm speaking up because I feel it's necessary that we get past the stereotype of young, black men and especially with our youth."

Wade and James decided Thursday to make their reactions about the Martin situation public, and James felt the best way to do that was the team photo with everyone wearing hoodies.

"Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Trayvon Martin for their loss and for everyone involved in this terrible tragedy," the Heat said in a statement Friday afternoon. "We support our players and join them in hoping that their images and our logo can be part of the national dialogue and can help in our nation's healing."

Earlier Friday, Fox News Channel commentator Geraldo Rivera said on "Fox & Friends" the hoodie Martin wore when he was killed was as much responsible for his death as the man who shot him. Rivera later said his comment was "politically incorrect."

Separately, a Florida state lawmaker, Rep. Alan Williams, a Democrat from Tallahassee, urged the Heat stars ? along with New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire, a central Florida native ? in an early Friday post on Twitter to wear hoodies during pregame warmups to call attention to the Martin story.

Such a move would not be permitted under the NBA's uniform policy, although Heat players are planning to pay tribute to Martin in some manner when they face the Pistons on Friday night.

"When you see Trayvon, when you see that image, he could be anybody's kid, black or white, Hispanic, Asian, what have you," Williams said in a telephone interview. "Basketball is a sport that kind of transcends race and class and all those things that divide us. For me, as a state representative, we have to go beyond the traditional routes that some people would take."

The NBPA called not only for Zimmerman's "prompt arrest," but a review of the Sanford Police Department.

"Their silence in the face of this injustice is reprehensible and they cannot be trusted to safe guard the citizens of the Sanford community equally," the NBPA said. "The NBPA seeks to ensure that Trayvon Martin's murder not go unpunished and the elimination of the injustices suffered by the innocent."

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla;

beat until fluffy. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and cocoa; add

to creamed mixture. Stir in nuts if desired. Spread in a greased jelly

roll pan. Bake at 350 for 15-18 minutes. Sprinkle marshmallows

evenly over cake; return to oven for 2-3 minutes. Using a knife

dipped in water, spread the melted marshmallows evenly over cake.

Cool.

For topping, combine chocolate chips, butter and peanut butter in a

small saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until

melted and well blended. Remove from heat, stir in cereal. Spread

over bars. Chill.

OutWrite ? Gay Gaming

I?m a gamer, and by that I mean I play videogames, a lot. Ask me about the industry and I?ll tell you my favorite game companies and we can discuss gameplay innovation, IPs, storyline, game engines, etc. I like my videogames, but I would like them a lot more if they would stop being so blatantly homophobic and heteronormative.

Bioware is one of my favorite videogame developers. They?ve consistently proven that they have an excellent grasp of how to make good games with incredible, immersive storylines. And they?re one of the first videogame developers to add gay, lesbian and bisexual storylines and characters into their games.

In the 2003 Knights of the Old Republic, Bioware originally intended to include a lesbian character, but after some disagreement with LucasArts (who held the license for the game), the character became bisexual. Even so, it was a breakthrough in the gaming industry and the trend would be continued in every major Bioware game since. The way Bioware treated same-sex relationships was good too, characters reacted no differently than they did with the opposite-sex. However, this seems to have changed in Bioware?s flagship series, Mass Effect.

Mass Effect 1 notably has no male same-sex options, and the female same-sex option is technically of an all-female alien race, so it?s not technically a lesbian relationship. Mass Effect 2 comes packaged with disabled scenes that make it clear that same-sex relationships had been on the table, enough that some of the scenes had been fully made and voice acted. It?s interesting that Bioware has chosen to forego what they?ve included in every other game they?ve made.

We should consider Bioware?s current position. In less than a decade, they?ve gone from a relatively unknown developer to one of the world?s leading videogame brands. What once went under the radar now gets to be blasted on Fox News and a ?Family Values? group. They responded by mostly removing the offending content.

When asked about this decision, Mass Effect project lead Casey Hudson responded, ?Everything new that we add still requires extra content. So we kind of pulled back and looked at where we had to draw the line in terms of how much content we make. We still view it as? if you?re picturing a PG-13 action movie. That?s how we?re trying to design it. So that?s why the love interest is relatively light.? While his first argument seems reasonable (though it?s interesting that Bioware had enough resources to start making scenes for same-sex relations but not finish them), his second is rather suspect. First, Mass Effect 2 is not a PG-13 action movie, it?s rated M and requires an ID to purchase. Even more importantly, a player can initiate romances with opposite-sex characters, but this apparently stays in the PG-13 category? Instead, same-sex romances by nature of existing automatically enter R rated territory?

Now let?s talk about Mass Effect 3. It just came out on March 6^th and I haven?t gotten a chance to play it. But already, I?m seeing comments pop up all around the internet. Here?s one of the tamer ones from Metacritic, ?Bioware figured let?s make the hero homosexual now in stark contrast to the first 2 games where he was normal.? In Mass Effect 3, there are new two romance options: one is a strictly gay option and the other strictly lesbian. (Just a reminder that they are options.) Almost immediately upon release, the internet was flooded with people who said they hated the game and that it ?forced them to be gay?. Since I?ve never played the game, I searched around online and found an article titled, ?How Hard is it Not to be Gay in Mass Effect 3?? on Forbes. Paul Tassi writes, ?Conversations with Cortez [the gay character] take up about five minutes of the game so far, and homosexuality has come up for maybe ten seconds. Mass Effect teaches you to treat gays?like people. Cortez?s story of loss is quite sad, and there?s no reason you can?t console him without either of you taking your pants off.?

Still, many angry gamers don?t seem to accept the very existence of the gay storyline. Kevin Vanord, a senior editor at GameSpot describes the anti-gay perspective, ?No matter that you can simply choose not to pursue that road if you don?t wish to. To this gamer, the answer is simple: Bioware must cater to him, and to him alone. It?s bad enough that the real world has to include homosexuals, but his games, too? Preposterous. Disgusting. Liberal. It?s the gay agenda at work, soiling the heteronormative power fantasy he?s been able to have up to this point.?

Greg Zeschuk, Bioware co-founder finds it surprising that having a gay option creates this much drama. ?It?s surprising that people think it?s that big a deal,? Greg Zeschuk said. ?If you?re creating this kind of content, it?s very natural to provide all the options.? Bioware is not an activist or progressive company; it simply sees the gay storyline as a realistic option to add into a role-playing game.

So in the end, all this controversy boils down to some more homophobia. It?s really sad that a simple five-minute romance storyline churns out this much spite, but it?s also a warning. Our fight isn?t over. As long as entire communities continue to hate even the existence of ours, we cannot become complacent. To Bioware, I applaud you for redeeming yourself in the eyes of gay gamers and giving much needed visibility to LGBT people, especially in the completely natural and unexceptional treatment they give the gay romance arcs. The videogame industry needs more portrayals of gay characters like those in Mass Effect, where a gay character is just as regular as a straight character, and no one is any more exceptional. Only through building this visibility can we eventually come to a point where being gay can be perceived by everyone, to be as normal as being straight.

Home Health Care | NC BEA Health Blog

Taylee Gulas, now 7, was born without an esophagus and part of her airway. She has a rare condition called VATER syndrome, which causes a series of related birth defects in infants. For Taylee, that means she can\?t talk, eat, or swallow normally and needs a trach tube. It also means that she requires constant medical care, so the family has a home health care nurse 120 hours a week.

Samsung considering Android-based digital camera

Android on a mainstream digital camera? Yes, you could live to see the day. We're at Samsung's Korean headquarters this week, where we had an opportunity to sit down with the company's research and development team to talk about the past, present and future of digital imaging. One interesting bit of discussion: Samsung is considering an "open" camera operating system. It's still early days and nothing is confirmed but, given the company's support for Android on other platforms, that OS would be a logical choice. What we know is that Samsung R&D has been researching bringing Android to its digital cameras -- a move that would be far from shocking, considering that development teams do tend to collaborate, and the company clearly has experience with the Google OS. And while there are likely to be such open OS prototypes buried deep within Sammy HQ, they're mere experiments at this point -- at least from a production perspective.

What exactly would an OS like Android mean for digital camera users? It could be a major breakthrough from a usability standpoint, opening up the in-camera ecosystem to third-party developers. We could see Twitter and Facebook apps that let you not only publish your photos directly with a familiar interface, but also see photos shared by your friends. A capacitive touchscreen would let you type in comments directly as well. You could publish to web-based services, utilize apps that enable post-capture creativity or receive firmware updates directly over WiFi. That hotshoe or USB port could accommodate a variety of different accessories, like a microphone or 4G modem that could be used with several models, including those from other manufacturers. While there's nothing making Android integration impossible from a technical standpoint, there are obvious disadvantages as well -- especially for camera makers. Stability would become an issue -- your camera could need a reboot just as often as your smartphone -- and such a powerful imaging device could theoretically cannibalize tablets and smartphones, though on a limited scale. Sadly this is merely educated speculation at this point, pending a product announcement from Samsung, though we wouldn't be surprised to see it come to fruition -- perhaps even before the next CES.
